In this cold week of January, Europe coordinates forces and demonstrates that middle powers, when unified, can constrain a superpower. France, Britain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and other EU countries are ready to invoke article 5 of NATO teatry, which was signed in Washington in 1949.
According to NATO's Article 5, an armed attack against one member state is considered an attack against all. In this perspective, Trump's threats to Greenland did more to unite Europe than any speech or policy paper could have achieved. He threatened. Europe unified. He backed down.
Who gives him the right to threaten an European state ❓ Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1814 and it gained extensive self-rule in 2009. Denmark handles defence and foreign policy 🇬🇱 🇩🇰
I think Trump feels humiliated by how this played out, as European countries demonstrated they will defend each other even against threats from Washington.
Unity provides protection 🇨🇦 🇪🇺 🇬🇧
Thank you Mr. Trump to wake us up.

Hello, Giorgio! In 1814 Greenland became a Danish colony. And since 1953 Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom.
ReplyDeleteMore precisely, Greenland was managed as a Danish colony unitl 1953. Since then, Denmark ended its colonial status and Greenland became an integral part of the Danish Kingdom with representation in the Denmark's parliament.
Delete¡Cómo está el mundo!
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo, Giorgio.
También hay una nueva entrada en mi blog.
Espero que tengas un buen día.
Thank you, Marisa :-)
Delete...there's strength in unity!
ReplyDeleteYes, it works.

ReplyDeleteYes, that's right. Finally, Europe is showing unity. :)
My only words are the "thing" is a moron.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reminding me that informal English word, Nicole :-) ... according to the Cambridge Dictionary, the word "moron" means stupid person. That's a good adjective for that US billionaires' puppet.
DeleteGlad to see European countries humiliated that moron.
Take care, Nicole.
Hi Giorgio. Regarding Greenland, I believe that sooner or later this island will be in the hands of the US, Russia, or China. Of those, I'd prefer the US.
ReplyDeleteAnother point: some people have no right whatsoever—not even a moral one—to criticize Trump (my opinion on Greenland is irrelevant, as I'm writing objectively now!) if they support their leaders, who are: war criminals, murderers, liars, corrupt—nothing short of this—creatures who murder, bomb hospitals, sanatoriums, settlements, and kill civilians. And one more thing: their leaders have been doing the same and have been occupying the territory of their sovereign, independent neighbor for years.
Anna, I hope that Greenland will be in hands of the EU. That Island is located in the Arctic Ocean, which is going to became a strategic area for positioning nuclear weapons. In this perspective, there are two nuclear powers in the EU.
DeleteNot to mention of Greenland natural resources, such a copper, gold, nickel, uranium, titanium, and vanadium, plus potential oil and gas reserves.
With regards to leaders who are war criminals, I hope you're also talking about Benjamin Netanyahu.
Anna, I realized that the war criminals, corrupt officials, and murderers are the Danish government. You wrote everything correctly. WELL DONE for writing the truth for the first time in your life.
DeleteYesterday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen apologized to the people of Greenland for the genocide. The Danes were very cruel to the Inuit people of Greenland, like all colonizers. They forcibly sterilized teenage girls. For two centuries, the Inuit have been demanding Greenland's independence from Denmark.
I know Danish policy-makers were cruel to indigenous peoples of the Arctic and Subarctic Greenland region. Unfortunately, many colonizers were cruel as well (e.g. European countries' colonial past in Africa).
DeleteThe Danish authorities should have apologized before this US expansionist aim happened. Better late than never.
Thanks to both of you, Irina and Anna, for sharing your point of view.
He probably does feel humiliated Giorgio.
ReplyDeleteHope you are well. It has been mild over here but raining!
US billionaires and investiment management companies are the puppeteers of that stupid yellow haired man.
DeleteThe weather is too rainy here in Rome and its surroundings.
Take care, Amanda.
Buen fin de semana. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteIt's said that something good comes out of something bad and the good came out.
ReplyDeleteIt seems international politics is reshaping its world structure. I hope this will take us to a better world.
DeleteI appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Thank you, Margaret :-)

Hello Ananka, it's working again this morning. I can write answers close to the comments now. Maybe it was a temporary maintenance issue.
DeleteGreetings,

It is a stark reminder that collective resolve and adherence to international law can temper even the most powerful actors, reaffirming that unity among states remains a formidable safeguard of sovereignty

DeleteYes, unity works. And it's also an excellent tool for nuclear deterrence. I mean that in a world of nuclear powers (such as US, China, Russia and India), European countries have no choice but to unite.
Unity is very effective!
ReplyDeleteIt’s striking to see how quickly unity can form when faced with external pressure. The way European countries stood together over Greenland really shows the strength of collective security and how history and agreements like NATO’s Article 5 still matter today.
ReplyDeleteGiorgio, as much as we know, 4 people have been shot by ICE. 2 have died. After Rene Nicole Good was killed the protesters came out in force. The man on the video on my blog that was shot died. ICE has no restrictions on what they can do so they do the worst. The Governor just called up the National Gard. This is exactly what the "thing" wants. He will allow it to escalate so he can enforce marshal law, start a civil war and then he can stop all elections. ICE took into custody a 5 year old the other day. It's not the first child. Now people are hiding kids because ICE is going to schools and taking kids. This is just the beginning. Keep us in your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThis really shows how important unity is. When countries stand together, they are much stronger and harder to bully. Europe’s quick response proves that cooperation works better than threats. Hopefully, this will remind leaders that respect and teamwork lead to better outcomes than intimidation.
ReplyDeleteWhat a week this has been, and it has shown how important unity is.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
