US electoral college system

In almost every US Presidential Election, the winner of the national popular vote also won the Electoral College. What happened in 2016 was extremely rare, as while Clinton received 2.87 million more votes than Trump did, Trump received the majority in the Electoral College. Actually, in the 2016 US Presidential Election, ten members of the Electoral College voted for a candidate different from the one to whom they were pledged.

This happened just five times in American history, but twice in the last 16 years, the other time being George W. Bush's Electoral College defeat of Al Gore in 2000. In the US Electoral College system, each state gets a certain number of electors based on the total House and Senate representatives in each state's congressional delegation. According to many political experts, the problem is that the Electoral College weights the election in favor of small, rural states. The picture above shows that smallest-population states have three elctoral votes, while California, the largest, has 55.

With regard to US popular vote, which will be held next week, the poll found that Joe Biden hold an 8-point lead over Trump nationwide, 52 % to 44 %:

As it is known, Russia's intelligence services conducted cyber operations against targets associated with the 2016 US Presidential Election.

I do hope this time Russian Government doesn't order an influence campaign aimed at 2020 US election.

  1. ...since each state regardless of population has 2 Senators, small, sparsely populated states have a greater representation in the Electoral College. Something MUST be done so that the candidate with the most votes is the winner, having a handful of "Battle Ground" states deciding the election is insane!!!

    1. True. Wyoming, with just 582,000 people, has the same number of Senators as California, which has 39.5 million! I think this is not fair.

    1. Actually, on November 3rd, US people have the opportunity to choose their fate, in terms of unemployment, health care, human rights, environmental protection, weapons and missiles trafficking, COVID-19 epidemic management, etc. ... at the moment unemployment rate in the US is about 15%: that's how that man made "America great again".

Thanks for your kind words, Luiz. Nave a nice Sunday!

  3. Oh, I just found out if a country's voting results are also influenced by intervention from other countries. Hopefully the upcoming presidential vote will come purely from the results of the people's votes.

It will be nerve wrecking. I’m planning to read all day and not watch tv. : ) We will see… : )
And do you know why elections are held in November and on a Tuesday (In the USA)?... I’m sure you do… : ))

    1. I think, according to the US Constitution, popular vote is always held on the first Tuesday of November :-) ... I am so curious to see what American people will be able to do on November 3rd. Unfortunately, winning the popular vote doesn't ensure victory, as we saw in 2016 Presidential Election :-)

    3. That's true, on the other hand, on July 6th this year, US Supreme Court said States may require members of the Electoral College to vote for the Presidential candidates they had promised to support ... if this works, weapons makers and oil lobbists can't "buy" members of the Electoral College.

  5. I sincerely look forward to the end of the election. I can't stand the toxic environment it creates. I have seen friend turn against friend over differing political views.
