Energy crisis

The fact that the ongoing war in Ukraine will not soon go to an end is well known, unfortunately. And this indicates that EU countries can't continue to be reliant on Russian gas. With more than 22% of the world electricity generation coming from gas, many depeloped and developing countries are still reliant on such fossil resource.  In addition to power plants, another huge quantity of world gas production is used for other purposes, such as urban utilities, service sector, and industrial use.  In this perspective, the demand for LNG has grown exponentially in many countries, such as China and India. On the other hand, gas consuption has been decreasing sharply in some countries, like Japan and South Korea, due to the reopening of nuclear power plants. Actually, such countries have been implementing a policy of energy conservation.

In the late 1960s, after the discovery of the Yamburg gas-fields in West Siberia, which is the world third largest one, Austria became the first European country to sign a long-term gas supply deal with Russians. We have to consider the fact that Austria was, and still is, both landlocked and neutral from a geopolitical point of view. Since then, Russian gas has been attractive to Europe because of its availability. Moreover, it was cheaper and easy to transport from West Siberia to Central Europe. That's way its importance have been growing in the last three decades, as some EU countries moved to end coal and nuclear power plant production.

Now EU countries are going to increase purchases of liquefied natural gas from other producers, as they are compelled to replace Europe's import of Russian gas. Moreover, as we have already seen since early this year, the wars have been fought differently: on 18 February 2022 and on 27 September 2022 three Russian gas pipelines were damaged by explosions. The military operations just mentioned interrupted the gas delivery to many EU countries.

But, as it is known, the EU isn't yet equiped to replace Russian gas entirely. And in this perspective, Southern Europe's territory is so important for supply of gas to EU countries, because of its geographical location. In addition to the Trans-Mediterranean Pipeline, which already delivers Algerian gas to mainland Italy and Slovenia (through Tunisia and the island of Sicily), a shelved gas pipeline is under construction. It would link gas from Algeria to Italy via the island of Sardinia. Not to mention of the Trans Saharian gas pipeline that will be then connected to the existing pipelines that already run to Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor also delivers gas to Europe from the Caspian area (Azerbaijan). It connects the Trans Anatolian pipeline at the Turkish-Greek border, crosses Greece, Albania and the Adriatic sea, before coming ashore in South Italy.

This mean that we have to switch to renewable energy as soon as we can: experts of the Snam SpA, an Italian energy infrasctucture company, say that the amount of energy that hit our planet in an hour is enough to meet global energy needs for an entire year. But while world population has reached 7 billion, current technologies don't allow for huge harnessing of this potential yet.

    1. That's true! But if Ukraine (puppet) hadn't tried to join NATO's military organization, we (EU countries' people) wouldn't need to give up Russian gas ... in early 2019 the previous Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, signed a constitutional amendment committing the country to becoming a member of NATO. Not to mention of NATO (USA & UK) military drills which took place on the Ukrainian territory in 2021. As a result, there's a war in Europe.

  3. Hi Giorgio! Unfortunately, but the winter promises to be very bad... It would be good if the winter was short and warm.

  4. What a detailed piece of essay you put forward. Renewable technology is just not that advanced yet to substitute the fossil fuel generated power. While the intention to change is a great cause, there is not really a viable alternative so far.

  5. The countries of the EU are experiencing the shortage of gas NOT because there is a war in Ukraine but because...
    1.The EU closed all gas pipe lines;
    2. USA blew up the Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2.

The EU had the same problems before the 24th of February. The EU countries yourselves are to blame.

    1. Everybody knows that Russia had been suppliying 45% of EU's natural gas import until the 24th of February. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in late February, Russia's natural gas delivered to the EU has been decreased to 7.5%.

The military attack to the Nord Stream 2 pipelines, in late September, is completely out of topic! Moreover, Nord Stream 1 had already halted since the 31st of August.

Sorry to see you don't know that some EU countries, such as Hungary and Slovakia, are still buying natural gas from Russia. Those two landlocked European countries disagree on sanctions against Russia. Not to mention that flows of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine are still stable in October ... there is a war between Russia and Ukraine, and Russian gas ridiculously flows across Ukraine.

I don't understand why you don't write the thruth! As you can see, you are wrong due to the fact that the EU didn't close all gas pipelines as you mentioned in your comment above.

  8. The trouble is that the road to an important support by the renewable energy is still long and far and we need energy and gas now. The other gas solutions you mentioned, unfortunately, aren't enough to give Europe the LNG needed. The only fast and successful solution is peace in Ukraine, but for some strange and secret reasons EU seem to be deaf to this call that comes from all European citizens who hope it will be heard instead.

    Sorry for the removed comments

    1. That's true, Daniele! 100% renewables isn't feasible in the next decades. Anyway, since 2010 initial capital costs of solar, wind and storage have declined significantly.

A negotiation table about Russia-Ukraine would be the solution, you're right! But I think that buying 45% of natural gas from Russia was a big EU's strategical mistake. EU policy-makers knew that NATO (USA & UK) was going closer and closer to the Russian border. And this could be a provocation. But this doesn't mean that members of the Russian government are right.

    2. "But this doesn't mean that members of the Russian government are right."

Yes I agree with your comment. Especially talking about your sentence I reported in quotation marks, it's from the beginning of this war that I think there are no innocent countries taking part in this conflict and more this war is going on more this thought seems to me so clear.

    3. Exactly, my friend. Since the war began Western powers, such as USA or UK, haven't been talking about a negotiation table seriously. Not to mention of three military drills held in 2021 by USA & UK on the Ukrainian territory.
From a political point of view, this war also demonstrates that the EU doesn't exist anymore.
Thanks for sharing your interesting point of view, Daniele!

    4. ... in the meanwhile, massive Russia's air raids, such as those carried out this week, give them (the USA) the opportunity to send Ukraine an additional $ 725 million package of weapons and other military assistance.
This means that negotiations and peace agreements will still be out of the table.

    5. I think that EU never really existed except for one. thing, her most lovely sport: To create pain to the EU people in their countries. About your news in your following comment, I can only see that maybe escalation began.

    6. That's true, Daniele! Unfortunately, I'm afraid the war has just begun, thanks to USA and their two puppets UK & EU ... we, Europeans, have enabled the USA to bring the war in Europe.
While the USA was choosing their puppets as Ukraine's president we, Europeans, said nothing.
While the USA was expanding NATO countries closer and closer to the Russian border we, Europeans, said nothing.
While the USA, with its NATO mask, in 2021 made three military exercises on the Ukrainian territory we, Europeans, made nothing.
And now, while the USA is trying to create a neverending war in Europe (as Americans already made in Syria, Libya, Yemen, and so on) we, Europeans, are saying nothing.

    1. I think so, Alexander. Unfortunately, some world powers and their multinational companies see Ukraine war as great opportunity. Poor Ukrainian people fell in the same trap as we see in Syra, Libya, Yemen, etc.

    1. Glad to hear your appreciation! Thank you for that :-)

On the one hand we don't have a good alternative yet, as you mentioned. On the other hand, since April I haven't heard any valuable proposal of negotiation by EU - UK - USA.
I have heard that the Turkish President calls on Russia's war with Ukraine to be resolved through peace negotiations, but USA - EU - UK don't do the same.
