1989 Baltic human chain

34 years ago, on August 23, 1989, about two million people from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined hands. They formed a human chain stretching through the three Baltic countries.

It was a peaceful protest .

  2. Hi Gorgio!
I'm pleased that you are remembering this important event.
    P.S.
Giorgio there is a real Africa in Poland. I tell you that I can't stand any more. In the shade it was 26 degrees yesterday around 17.

  3. Maybe that's what we need today too, but these days the sense of universality, union and solidarity among peoples has unfortunately vanished.

    1. True! I am afraid solidarity among people doesn't exist anymore.

  5. I have to agree with Daniele. I really couldn't see that happening in the US. How are you? I hope all is well with your family.

    1. I also agree with both of you!

Thank you for asking about my family, Nicole. My wife's right knee is improving thanks to physiotherapy. I'm sorry to hear Covid-19 cases are rising steadily in Italy.

In the meanwhile, the girls are in Ireland on holiday. I'll show their pictures in my next post.

Enjoy the rest of this week, Nicole!

  8. If it were not for the help of the Soviet Union, then now there would be neither Lithuania, nor Latvia, nor Estonia, nor Poland ...

    1. On 23 August 1939 the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact was signed. It was a non-aggression pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that partitioned Eastern Europe between them.

  9. It was just a 10 year non-aggression pact that Hitler broke and attacked the Soviet Union in 1941.
Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia themselves decided to join the USSR. Now they speak differently. But this is a lie.
During the years of independence, these countries have adopted fascist ideology. Russian people who were born and lived all their lives in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are not considered citizens of these countries. This is real genocide.
They are not allowed to speak Russian and teach their children in Russian, although their parents, grandfathers and great-grandfathers have always lived in these countries.

    1. As written above, it was a peaceful protest. It was a declaration condemning the “military occupation” of their countries. Two years later, the Soviet Government finally recognized the independence of all three Baltic states. It was followed by complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Luthuania, Latvia and Estonia..

  11. Such a powerful symbolism of solidarity, unity, and strength.

    Happy Monday, Giorgio!

    1. Exactly, Veronica! That human chain meant a great solidarity among peoples of the three Baltic countries. Three years later Soviet Union recognized the independence of Luthuania, Latvia and Estonia.
