Kiss statue

A copy of the colossal sculpture known as Kiss statue (kiss of a sailor and a young nurse) will be soon removed from Cvitavecchia's seafornt. The Mayor and the majority of the local administration say there is no connection between the statue and the history of the town. Actually they are right.

The sculptor Johnny Seward was inspired by a photograph taken in 1945 by Alfred Eisenstaedt when Japan surrendered to the US. That's why that artwork has nothing to do with Italian culture.

Meanwhile prices for good necessary for basic survival and well-being continue to rise slightly, because of the lack of negotiations about Trumps' trade war.

The main problem for our country is that Italy's wine sales to the United States represent 25% of its wine exports. I hope our Prime Minister, who is visiting the White House right now, will be able to seek more lasting tariff relief.

The above picture shows fishermen's boats stalled as they will not work during the two days leading up to Easter.

HAPPY EASTER  ☀

  2. It's interesting how art can evoke such strong feelings, especially when its history doesn’t quite match the local context. I hope the statue’s removal leads to something meaningful for the town. Also, I can feel the strain of the rising costs. Here’s hoping the talks bring relief soon. Wishing you a peaceful Easter! www.melodyjacob.com

  3. I feel sorry for this statue! I like it! Maybe this city is famous only for this statue.
    Giorgio, Happy Easter!

  4. I think it's a very wise decision; that statue is out of place...
I hope this tariff war ends soon; it doesn't seem to be going very well for the United States either.

    1. Yes, I think US' economy is trouble, that's why American policiy-makers are rising tariffs. Trump is not acting alone.

  6. Perhaps another work of art will be installed in the place where the statue stands. One that relates to the city. :)
The photo at the harbor is beautiful.

I wish you a nice Easter weekend!

  7. While the removal of the Kiss statue reflects a local decision grounded in cultural relevance, it also highlights broader questions about global symbolism and diplomacy—especially as Italy navigates vital economic ties like its significant wine exports to the U.S., where ongoing tariff relief remains crucial for long-term stability.

    1. That kissing statue simbolizes an historic moment. The same popular attraction is also located in San Diego and Pearl Harbour.

On the trade war front, Trump and Italy's prime minister agree on organize a meeting between EU and US in Rome in May. Meanwhile, a deal over the fate of social media platform TikTok may have to wait.

The tariffs are a worry making more items expensive for everyone.

  11. It seems to me to make perfectly good sense to remove the statue that has no connection with Italy. Sophia Loren would be a better choice! Too bad for the Americans who will be deprived of drinking fine Italian wine and a cruel blow to wine producers.

    1. I agree with you! A statue of Sophie Loren would be the right choice.
Italian wine makers are afraid Italy's export will decrease sharply. Actually, the stocks of Campari, the company who invented iconic cocktails like the Americano and Negroni in the 1920s, has decreased sharply since Trump got in office last year.

  16. Fair enough to remove the statue if it doesn't fit the town’s history. Bigger worries right now anyway—like prices going up and the wine trade. Hope the PM sorts something out.
