Tunisia's departure point

Since 2022 the coast near the Tunisian town of Sfax has become an important departure point for people fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa. In this context, the EU is ready to give Tunisia 100 million euros for border management.

Italian Prime Minister and EU Commission Chief visited the North African country later last week, as they wanted to offer aid. The problem is that before they went to the North African country, Tunisian President had already said that Tunisia's government would not accept becoming a border guard for other countries.

In my opinion, Tunisian President doesn't want to accept money from Western countries. I think he is afraid that if members of Tunisian government were to accept money from EU and Western countries, their country would lose its neutrality. As it is well known, many Africa's countries are going to join the BRICS. In addition, they  disagree on Washington's policy to support Taiwan and Ukraine.

Meanwhile, according to Italy's National Institute for Statistics, around 9 out of 10 rape have been committed by people with an immigrant background. I'm afraid that the big surge in cross-Mediterranean illegal immigration will increase sharply in the second  half of this year.

The photos above were taken in Tunisia two months ago.

  1. Giorgio, I wrote to you in your previous post why African countries support Russia. Yes, they want to join BRICS. Africans don't trust the EU. They were often deceived and robbed.

    1. Hello Irina,
I saw your comment on my previous post. Thanks for that!

Many countries want to join BRICS. Consequently, it's easy to see that the U.S. dollar will no longer be the single most traded currency.

  2. ...economic and political refugee is a HUGE problem around the world. People have immigrated to have better life throughout history. We seem unable or unwilling to address this humanitarian crisis.

    1. I agree on your point, Tom!
We, people who live in Northern Hemisphere, need to treat all human beings with respect and dignity. Political refugees, who are seeking protection from persecution and serious human rights violations, need political asylum. That's right!
But sometimes it is economic concerns or opportunities that provide the main reason for a migration move. That's why we have to help them to improve their countries' economic systems.

  3. It's possible, maybe the Tunisian President doesn't want money for EU for two reasons. The first is the same you wrote in your post, (fear to lose neutrality) and the second, I think, is that all that money is subjected and in reality granted to a precise condition which is not that of making the Tunisian economy grow, or at least it is not the fundamental one, but that of stopping the departures of migrants in any way and by any means and this condition may not be appreciated by Tunisia because it could be more convenient for them to let them leave

    1. Interesting point, Daniele!
Actually, it is good for all of them (the Tunisian President, migrants smugglers and human beings traffickers).

  4. Hi Giorgio!
I have heard about this issue and the words of the Tunisian president. I, agree with the opinion that emigration (the illegal!) is a huge problem! Emigration (the problem of this illegal and legal) was, is and in my opinion will be.
People from poor countries want a better life. The problem is that many illegal emigrants don't want honest work - they want various aid, social. We also keep in mind family reunification - the number of European and Muslim families.
A large number of Muslims don’t respect ours: religion, traditions and lifestyle too!
Illegal emigration makes money for the mafia too (and I believe that various politicians - from Brussels too!) are "sunk" in this cruel procedure!
Unfortunately, there are politicians who take advantage of poor people for their evil, nasty purposes (I speak, for example, about the situation related to my country and Lukashanka)!

    1. Hello Anna, as you mentioned, many muslim people don't respect our social rules, customs, religion, and laws.
And this is a problem mainly for Southern Europe's countries.
Meanwhile, at least 78 people have died and many more are feared missing after a fishing boat carrying refugees and migrants sank off the southern coast of Greece.

    2. It's also important to say that there are many migrants from Pakistan and India who are looking for job in Italy's countryside. And they are able to work in the farmland, picking fruits and vegetables in Central Italy. So they can send money to their families in Punjab.
But many illegal immigrants who come from North Africa are mainly useful for criminal organizations, as you mentioned in your comment.

Thanks for sharing your interesting point of view, Anna!

    1. The good news is that Sajid Mehmood, the main suspect of the capsized boat tragedy (this week close to the Greece coast), was arrested on Saturday at Karachi airport while he was trying to flee to Azerbaijan.

According to Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Sajid Mehmood was allegedly involved in smuggling people to Europe via Greece and Libya, as well as in a previous incident with a capsized migrant boat in Libya in March.

      Thank you for the appreciation!
      Have a nice Sunday :-)

  9. Inequality in our rapidly changing world is a major driver of migration.

  10. The European Union is blocking the grain deal. Grain from Ukraine and Russia had to be taken to the poorest countries in Africa. And he is taken to the countries of Europe. Africans receive only 3% of the grain. Russia is shipping grain and fertilizer to Africa for free, although sanctions prevent this.
I remember when, in early 2022, Ursula yelled that Russia was to blame for the fact that children were dying in Africa. But the UN and the European Union prevent the export of grain to African countries. That is why Africans flee to Europe to live and raise their children.

  11. I don't think so, Irina. People from Sub-Saharan Africa have been crossing the Mediterranean Sea (illegally) since very long time. Illegal immigration has nothing to do with Russia's intention to pull out of Black Sea grain deal.

Since 2000, the source countries of this illegal migration have grown to include sub-Saharan African states. Other source of immigration is related to the Syria war (once gain this has nothing to do with Ukrainian grain export via the Black Sea).

    Have a nice week, Irina.
