I like eating seasonally in winter, as I think we haven't to lose the beauty of the nature. The problem is that some veggies available at the grocery are not in season, and this may disconnect us from the roots of local and sustainable eating. Unfortunately I saw such a reliance on convenience also outside my country. For example, while I was visiting Scotland, England and Ireland I saw tomatoes, aubergines and green grapes in February at the Tesco Superstore.🍅🍇 But why we, humans, force to grow when it is not its natural time to grow ❓
Not only are in-season veggies healthier but they taste better too. In addition to this, our body specifically need vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that we can't find in veggies and fruits out of season. For example, we need Vitamin C and antioxidants in winter. Furthermore, from an environmental point of view, fruits and veggies out of season are shipped from far away. And not to mention of premature harvesting.
Have a nice month of February ... with in-season fruits and veggies 😃
...here, there are few in season fruits and veggies, but we have snow balls.
ReplyDeletePumpkins, Carrots, spinach, broccoli, radish, lettuce ... there are many winter vegetables on the 42nd parallel.
DeleteIo acquisto solo frutta e verdura di stagione.Buon pomeriggio da OLgica
ReplyDeleteThat's great :-) I sometimes do the same 🥕🥦🧄
DeleteHi Giorgio,
ReplyDeleteMy friend, I talking about seasonal food, that it's healthier and has a better taste when it's for example on vegetable and fruit time. In my city in every grocery store I can buy all year round a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Speaking of fruits and vegetables, I taste the most from my garden (I love the taste of tomatoes!!!), but I buy in stores during other seasons (of course, I don't buy every day!). I, for example, I buy in LIDL “Roman Tomatoes”.
Giorgio, I salute you and I wish you a good evening and Sunday!
Great to hear you can grow veggies in your garden :-)
DeleteThere is LIDL here too, but I don't like their fruit and veggies, as they are shipped from far away.
Have a nice week end, dear Anna !
This is a great post Giorgio and those veggies look amazing. Yes over here you can buy anything at anytime of the year haha! I think people need to eat more fruit and veg in general. There is so much processed foods in our culture, no wonder Scotland is so unhealthy!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the appreciation, dear friend Ananka :-)
DeleteUnfortunately, there is much processed food also here in Rome and its surroundings!
Eating vegetables and fruits in season is now a luxury. Most fresh produces have been frozen for several months before the arrival in store
ReplyDeleteTrue, fruit and vegetables are frozen for many months while they are shipped from other countries: as a result, nutrient loss and flavor differences.
DeleteBeautiful post

ReplyDeleteA good topic, important to address.
Last week I saw strawberries in the supermarket. I thought to myself, they can't taste good at all. It's much better to eat seasonally. :)
Wish you a wonderful new week
Thank you for sharing your point of view :-)
DeleteHave a nice new week too!
Fresh is always best and if we can all reduce our consumption of foods shipped in from distant places the world will be a better place.
ReplyDeleteTrue, we have to reduce our consumption of fruit, vegetables and other food shipped from other continents, as such food was harvested many months before. Completely agree on this point.
DeleteTe un buen mes. Me gustan las verduras de temporada. Te mando un beso y te deseo una buena semana.
ReplyDeleteSame to you :-)
DeleteI'm with you 100%.
ReplyDeleteNot easy to go twice a week at local farmers.
DeleteWarm regards, Nicole :-)
I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteHere in Australia we have strawberries and many other fruits and veggies all the year round because the summer fruit and veggies can be grown up north. Of course not everything is grown.
On the contrary, I see walnuts shipped from Australia at the supermarket located in my neighborhood :-)
DeleteHave a nice day, Margaret :-)
Interesting regarding the walnuts. I had no idea they were shipped to your country let alone where you live.
DeleteI've just read it, Irina. Thank you for remainding!
ReplyDeleteAs a child growing up our family would always eat foods in season, but of course over the years things have changed (and not always for the better). Foods are now flown all over the world and it seems that there are no food seasons in the shops!
ReplyDeleteI am fortunate that there is a farmers market nearby and it is so nice to get food from there.
All the best Jan

There also some farmers market in Rome's surroundings. In addition to fruit and vegetables we can also buy free-range chickens.
DeleteThat's a great point! In Malaysia, since we don’t experience distinct seasons, it can be harder to eat seasonally. But I still try to focus on local produce, as it’s fresher and supports our farmers. It’s always nice to enjoy fruits and vegetables that are grown nearby, even if we don’t have the typical seasonal changes!
ReplyDeleteThat's right, we have to support local farmers. I agree on this :-)
