EU at a crossroad

I hope my blogging friends don't get bored reading geopolitical news and comments about the dangerous war, which has been spreading in Est Europe since late February (or since 2014 when democratically elected Ukraine president was overthrown).

Actually, many people who live in the Western and Southern emyspheres don't perceive the war in East Europe as dangerous as it really is. This is a war that has changed Europe forever. The assumption that we have about Europe being forever safe, about borders being unchangeable, about human rights and convention on genocyde, and all the thinghs we have been taking for granted for many decades are now over.

According to the mainstream media system, the first anniversay of this war has been marked today, 24 february 2023. But it is not true, due to the fact that Russians had already invaded the main part of Donestk area some years before.

From a geopolitical point of view, we are clearly going towards a multipolar world, as USA unipolarism will not exist anymore. In this context, the EU is at a crossroad: it could be an outright USA's satellite or a third power between USA-UK and China-Russia-Iran-South Africa-etc.

I hope Taiwan's people will not fall in the same trap as we see Ukrainians.

  1. The war is terrible indeed. Just so sad that it happens in Europe too. Taiwan is inevitable to be conquered

    1. Many countries, such as the UK, Russia, Germany, etc. ... do not recognize Taiwan. All diplomatic relations take place on an unofficial basis.

  4. Hi Giorgio!
I’m not bored read your blog!!!
I agree with you the war in Ukraine has changed Europe and this situation is really very dangerous. But let's not talk only about Ukraine, because there is also Serbia…
Giorgio about the situation in Ukraine I wrote a long time ago on the blog - https://moimokiem-bezfikcji.blogspot.com/2019/01/prawda-o-dzisiejszej-ukrainie.html . I recommend to read the end, the last paragraph.

    1. Great to hear you're interested in such hot topics, Anna.
Serbia is a landlocked country and it could not afford a war. In addition it is between NATO countries, such as Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Hungary and Romania.
Anyway, I will ask you some info about Serbia through email.

Thank you for sending the link of your article about Ukraine war.

      I'll read it soon :-)
      Have a nice weekend ❗

Hey, Giorgio - I had only just found your comment over at my blog in my spam folder; Google marked it as suspicious and hadn't even posted it to the Blogger spam. Thanks for clearly stating how you come to visit from David's blog. Your comment is now live on that post.

I see we have a common interest in geoplitical history and current affairs. In casting my eye over a few posts, I would like to register a small concern that you do not cite sources and provide relevant links. For example, the image above (for copyright reasons if nothing else) ought to be linked to Base Nation or to David Vine's own website regarding US military bases and the effects of the military 'imperialism' that prevail. (All images that you do not own should be credited for their source.)

And propogating the potential 'fake news' of Sy Hersh brings little credit. He was once great; now in his mid-80s his reporting of the past 15-20 years has been very variable and refutable.

We live in challenging times - but then gain, when has humankind ever been otherwise? Only ever have there been periods of 'relative peace' (eg. Pax Romana, Pax Americana), still marked by revolts and minor conflicts in 'lesser regions'... those of us who feel a bit powerless can at least donate to aid organisations (not just for Ukraine, but other places of war and disaster - I provided links in that post of mine) - and sign the petition of Tavollo Della Pace to show parliaments everywhere that people call for peace.

    1. Hello Yamini, thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your comment. Glad to hear we've such common interest. I agree on mentioning sources and providing relevant links. You're right.

With regards to Seymour Hersh, I don't know how you can say that his findings are potential 'fake news'. He mentioned facts, official statements and inteviews. And, most importantly, EU media haven't mentioned his hypothesis about the destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline. Maybe you have other information at your disposal. The problem is that nowadays everything that is different from the mainstream is easily considered as 'a secret plan to do something illegal'.

People call for peace, but policy-makers don't hear. I am afraid many powers would like to see a neverending war in East Europe.

      Regards

I have to agree that peace seems elusive given the weight of commercial interests that drive war - but most certainly the voices for calm and conciliation must not cease from their cry!

Re SH; you say it yourself, what has written is 'hypothesis'. It is true that Politico-EU appears not to have taken up any mention of the work, but the US Edition published a rebuttal. Also, there has been some reference in "EU media" - in ascending order of significance:
      France24
< href="https://www.express.co.uk/news/science/1733341/uk-norway-gas-pipeline-threat-russia-punishment-nord-stream-leaks">UK Daily Express (not direct, but strongly related)
Kyiv Post (A well-balanced response, with an acknowledgement of potential, but caveats of 'if proven true'.)
      My final offering in this to you is from Filter Nyheter. This is an indepth look at the matter from the Norwegian side. In case you do not have GTranslate for the page, let me say that is a rebuttal from the relevant parties there as to the 'nonsense' of SHs reporting. They point to clear errors such his ID of the P8 plane; not even yet beyond trial flights at the time and never over that water (verfied by flight tracking), as well as misidentification, also, of the ships involved and that, again, the ones which did attend the NATO event were not over the area (again, verified by shipping tracking). I will add two excerpts from the lengthy article regarding SH;
"The article was self-published on the service Substack and it has not been published by any of the editor-controlled media that Hersh has previously collaborated with on controversial issues.

Although it is apparently world news, it is not substantiated with any documentation beyond reference to one anonymous source. Hersh does not account for the source's credibility beyond portraying him as a person "with direct knowledge of the operational planning".....
      [....]
"The writer also links Norway's role to the fact that Jens Stoltenberg is NATO chief, and describes Stoltenberg as someone "who has cooperated with American intelligence since the Vietnam War" and has had the full confidence of the United States ever since. (Stoltenberg was not born when the Vietnam War started, was 16 when it ended...)."

To be different from the 'mainstream' is no bad thing, but it must be backed up with properly verifiable sources and checkable references. This is why the majority of the media have opted to pretty much ignore this 'essay'...

And now I have almost written an essay in response to your post!!! 🫢 Thanks for providing the space for the debate.

    4. Hi, Yamini!
In my post I underline the fact that Western media haven't been mentioning this essay. Obviously, they are not obliged to blaming someone. But they could speak about Hersh's article at least.
With regards to Norway, this country is not an EU member, and it was not involved in the pipeline's contruction. I know that Norway could be interested in delivering gas to Europe and they made military exercises in the Baltic Sea with Americans. But this is not an evidence.
It seems we both agree on the fact that Hersh made an Hypotesis. But the article containing such Hypotesis has not been mentioned by the mainstream media. This is not fair. If the article were to blame Russia, China or Iran, it would be published by the Western media.

Thank you for sharing your interesting point of view. I am honoured to read your comment and its exhaustive explanation.

  7. Unfortunately I think that Europe, not the people living there but surely who has the power in that continent, has already decided. I fear that the definitive decision is to become slaves and not to be the third part in a future geopolitical chessboard .And what makes me extremely sad and even hopeless sometimes, is that we are in such a Bad times but seem to be getting worse still

    1. You are probably right, Daniele! People who run the Western world have already decided: the EU, UK, Norway (which is not EU member), Australia and other countries will continue to behave as America's satellites.
In the middle of this century the world is going to have two o three giants, such as America, China or India, because they are large population countries, huge economy and huge military power. As argued some years ago by the British former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, these super powers are going to be much bigger and more powerful than other smaller countries such as Brazil, Indonesia or South Africa. They are large population countries but not nearly as large as China or India. From a geopolitical point of view they are considered medium-sized countries.
In this world, if the medium-sized countries aren't banding togheter, the super powers above mentioned are going to sit on them. So if medium-sized countries were to join togheter, they would have some influence. But separately they are not going to be strong enough. Unfortunately, it's just a fact.
By saying that, we are not diminishing countries which are smaller than China or US. When countries like Germany, Spain or France are banding togheter in the EU, they are with a group of others. Consequently, they become able to operate as strong collective.
In this contest, each European country is part of the EU, which is the biggest political union in the world. The problem is that the EU, with its four hundred million hinabitants, will continue to be an USA's satellite. And this is so sad!

Thank you for sharing your point of view, Daniele!
