This morning I went shopping at the supermarket, athough I often choose to buy fruit and vegetables from smaller retail shops or local farmers. On the 22nd of February there were red and yellow peppers on the shelves. They seemed made of plastic.
I'm afraid that in the near future consumers in the EU can't indentify which fruits and vegetables are in season when.
Not to mention of grapes, which I used to eat from late August to early October. It's better to eat such fruit in Summer, as high water content of grapes can aid hydration and contribute to skin health.
Season-specific foods are not only fresher but also denser in terms of nutrition.
Unfortunately, I have just seen green and purple grapes at the supermarket today 🤨 ... as mentioned in my previous post, published on the 1st of February, I had already seen grapes at the supermarket in Winter when I went to Dublin, Edinburgh and London in the previous years.
In addition to this, fruit and vegetables' prices are still rising, as inflaction has surged ahead in the first month of the new year. Actually, inflaction in euro area in January 2025 increased by 2.5% compared with the same month in 2024.
You are touching on the current topic of eating in season fruit and vegetables only for good health
ReplyDeleteOut-of-season fruit and veggies taste so different.
DeleteBuena entrada en la que comentas la necesidad de consumir frutas y verduras de temporada. Completamente de acuerdo y además a ser posible que sean de lugares cercanos al lugar en que se vive.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo
Glad to see you visited my blog. Thanks for that!
Delete...with global trade, nothing is out of season these days.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, true ... walnuts from Chile and apples from New Zealand.
DeleteIt sounds like you had quite an insightful shopping trip! It’s a bit concerning how difficult it is becoming to find seasonal fruits and vegetables, especially with the rising prices. I completely agree that eating in-season produce is not only better for our health but also supports local farmers. It's interesting to hear about the blooming mimosa trees despite the rainy weather! Wishing you a lovely weekend too! I’d love for you to check out my new post!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the mimosa tree is already blooming because the weather wasn't as cold as it should be.
DeleteI'll check out your new post soon :-)
Totally agree with your reflection. Fruits and vegetables found in supermarkets only look good. Where I notice the difference the most is in the tomatoes...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo of the mimosa.
Greetings
Thanks for sharing your point of view :-)

ReplyDeleteThe blooming mimosa tree is beautiful.
The price tag is now causing problems for many people.
Families with children in particular are finding it increasingly difficult to pay for healthy food.
i wish you a very nice weekend :)
Higher inflaction rate in the euro area. I'm afraid poor people become poorer.
DeleteWell what can I say? Since president musk and his sidekick trump have invaded the US our food prices are incredibly high. In addition our produce doesn't look as good as yours. The photo of the tree is beautiful. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nicole :-) Same to you!
DeleteHi Giorgio!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are beautiful - I see what I saw yesterday in Lidl. I looking at the prices, I see that the grape in Lidl is about 0.5 Euro more expensive (I exactly such a container of green grape I bought yesterday). The prices of tomatoes and peppers are lower than in Poland.
Giorgio, I talking about the weather I had today the sun itself, blue skies and 21 degrees at noon in the sun :)
My friend, I wish you a good evening and a beautiful Sunday!
Dear Anna, that is not the typical weather we expect to see in winter. Actually, mimosa trees generally flower in early March.
DeleteHave a nice Sunday, Anna :-)
That Mimosa tree looks lovely ...
ReplyDeleteI was out earlier today and there are quite a few spring bulbs and flowers coming through, which was very nice to see.
We don't seem to have any fruit or vegetable seasons now do we!?
In many ways this is a shame. Growing up we only ate with the seasons but nowadays so much variety available, yes at a cost, and I agree the taste is not always as it should be.
I guess the choice is still ours do we buy it, what do we buy ...
I do like to use home grown farmers markets if I can.
Enjoy your weekend and the coming week.
My good wishes.
All the best Jan

I sometimes go shopping to farmer markets. The problem is that they are located 20 km far from the town. Prices are the as we see at the supermarket.
DeleteUnfortunately, people will not understand the difference between in-season and out-of-season fruit and vegetables.
Have a nice Sunday !
Por mi pais tambien esta lluvioso. te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice Sunday!
DeleteHello, Gorgio! The mimosa tree is very beautiful. There is so much snow in our region at the present time. Sometimes it snows every day. In our shops we also can see many fruits and vegetables.
ReplyDeleteThis years there has been no snow yet here in Rome and its surroundings.
DeleteAs for fruit and vegetables, I'm talking about those out of season, as I don't like to see melons and aubergines on supermarket's shelves in February. The problem is that greenhouse allow us to grow fruit and vegetables year around. Southeastern Spain has recently become a major hub of greenhouse agriculture.

The tree does look really lovely, the colour always stands out, must be good to see it in person.
ReplyDeleteI think the same that people in the future won't know what season their vegetables and fruit belong to.
Take care.
True, people will not know the difference between in-season and out-of-season fruit and vegetables. Some young people already think that eggplants and tomatoes have always been available round the year.
DeleteThe tree looks lovely. I totally agree with your post. We shouldn't really be eating out of season fruits and veg, but in this modern world we can get almost anything. Everything is on the rise price wise here too. It is crazy. I have noticed a big difference since we left the EU. A shopping used to cost me £20 it is now £40 or more. Petrol is very costly too and my partner moans about materials being costly as well, he does a lot of DIY and work on the house. And the worse is, if you want to buy healthy food it is costly yet processed junk food is cheaper! I have started to buy organic fruits and veg now too. I don't eat meat or fish as I am vegetarian.
ReplyDeleteIt’s worrying that many may forget what’s really in season, especially since seasonal produce is fresher and more nutritious. Seeing winter grapes feels so unnatural!
ReplyDeleteThe blooming mimosa tree is beautiful.
Happy Tuesday, Giorgio!
Soon you will be able to buy every fruit and vegetable all year long! Consumer demand, or at the very least consumer willingness, ensures that it will continue thus.
